Thousands Take To Waters Off California Beach For Powerful Tribute To Fallen Lifeguard

1490

Ben Carlson, 32, had been a lifeguard for 15 years before he passed away a few weeks ago. He was performing a rescue in Newport Beach when he sadly drowned.

Other lifeguards who were on duty at the time were able to rescue the swimmer successfully from the 8-foot surf off the Balboa Peninsula, but were unfortunately unable to save Carlson.

Over this past weekend, thousands of people paddled out to sea on paddle boards, boats and kayaks to honor the fallen lifeguard who had served their beach for over a decade. An additional 5,000 people watched from the beach.

This memorial is unlike anything we have ever seen. The mourners came together to form a circle while chanting Ben’s name over and over.
